The North End viewing club got off to a real promising start with Chelsea 3 – 2 Fulham yesterday, but personally, I’m much more excited with today’s pick of one soccer match to watch on TV for Tuesday, August 25 in the Year of our Maradona 2026: Chicago Fire vs. Monterrey in the Leagues Cup.

For today’s viewing party, we’re going with single-elimination (straight to penalties if tied after 90) quarterfinal action from the Leagues Cup tonight. This Fire team is getting closer and closer to answering one of the great lingering questions of American soccer: What if you gave Chicago a team actually worth caring about?
Gregg Berhalter has been building a squad worthy of receiving his bounce passes, and Robert Lewandowski’s arrival has coincided with a seven-match unbeaten streak across all competitions. Throughout Fire history, that kind of shit never happens. They’re right behind Miami in the Eastern Conference standings, and they’ve got a chance to do something special now in the Leagues Cup.
The atmosphere in Bridgeview should be good, a kind of 50-50 showcase with just enough animosity. Chicago is still dominated by Liga MX interest, and although Monterrey doesn’t have the support that América or Chivas would draw, Rayados will enjoy a strong backing against the Men in Red.
There’s also a good subplot here of Lewandowski competing against opposing striker Hugo Cuypers, the man he directly replaced in the Fire’s lineup. Lewy has three goals in six MLS appearances, but Cuypers was chasing the Golden Boot with 13 goals in 11 games before joining Monterrey for $7.5 million. He could douse the Fire… or Lewandowski could be the cow that kicks over the lantern.
POSTSCRIPT PARTY
For a minute there, after Zinckernagel tied it up at 1-1 with 30 to play, I was really beginning to believe… So what if Monterrey paid $9 million just to get Orbelín Pineda’s foot in the door and Chicago’s midfield three is paid like $1 million annually combined? The Fire were going to pull this off, even with Chris Brady really making me question how he made the World Cup roster.
But Pineda. Woof.
