Truth be told I’m kind of tired of José Mourinho at this point of the plotline, but there’s still fun to be had in seeing how he pieces together Vini-Mbappé-Bellingham+8.
And how many minutes does he give to Yan Diomandé? Over the course of a couple years, Diomandé has gone from being rejected by MLS Next Pro teams to pushing Lamine Yamal for the title of World’s Best Teenager. He got 27 minutes off the bench last weekend.
It wasn’t a convincing start for Madrid at Espanyol, but they got three points with a 90th-minute winner. Real Sociedad probably should’ve opened with a draw away to Betis at the Cartuja but missed some big chances in a 1-0 defeat.
Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal will get a hero’s welcome by the Bernabéu crowd for helping deliver the World Cup to Spain, but Madridistas will be worried about what he does to their club directly after.
I don’t think it’ll be easy for Los Blancos on the evening, but I do expect a piece of magic from Mbappé to make it easier.
POSTSCRIPT PARTY
I’m enjoying the early stages of Real Madrid’s attempt to wrest the title back from Barcelona by turning to Mourinho and his 4-2-3-1. It’s like I’m reliving 2011-12 again, and that was a hell of a time for me to be alive.
Watching Mbappé rip eight shots and score three goals certainly conjured images of Ronaldo sprinting around in all-white during that period, and Bellingham was dripping like Özil out there. It’s all got me crawling around Wikipedia, looking at Gonzalo Higuaín stats. And that’s what partying is all about.
